1.6.5 conclusion: the extent of the 'extensions of man'

The medium is the massage
Self-extending
the question of Technology in culture
Metaphysical is the branch of philosophy that investigates principles of reality transcending those of any particular science, traditionally, cosmology and ontology.
Nominalism is the doctrine holding that abstract concepts, general terms, or universals have no independent existence but exist only as names.

Today is last class.
Dr.Yoon explains new media aesthetic.
Aesthetic object is from material to abstract idea.
New aesthetic object.
Applied media artworks are art + com and spot install action.

This term class is difficult to me.
In fact, I don’t understand class first.
But as time goes by, I can understand aesthetic media more and more.
Yet I don’t know media perfect, but have interest it.
That’s enough!!!
I thanks for Dr.Yoon!!!!

new media: determining or determined? 2_2 (o712o6)

1.6.4 the many virtues of Sant McLuhan

The extension thesis is that the technology is an 'extensions of man' (based in the nature of the human body).
There are four versions of this thesis.
First, Aristotle is the idea that tools are extensions of soul and body. (Body is the soul’s natural tool.)
Second, Marx is productions of Human industry. For example, railways electric telegraphs machine……
Third, KAPP argued that telegraphics is an extension of nervous system, just as railways extend the circulatory system.
Last, Bergson, if our argans are natural instruments, our instruments must then be artifical organs.

The environmental thesis is ‘the new media are not bridges between man and nature: they are nature.
It is that above a certain threshold of quantitative change, there arises a qualitative change in the structure and functioning of that society.
And technology becomes autonomous determining its own fucture and that of the socity it shapes.

The anti-content thesis is ‘Societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media by which men communicate than by content of the communication.
“THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE”
Societies have always been shaped more by nature of the media by which men communicate than by content of communication.

Really, Saint McLuhan is eminent person.
I think that his thesis convince me of my a sensory nerve’s important.
How wonderful my sensor is!

new media: determining or determined? 2 _1 (o712o4)

1.6.2 mapping Marshall McLuhan and Williams & 1.6.3 Williams and the social shaping of technology

We concentrate on three Marshall McLuhan’s idea.
Before we find three ideas, we can think a narrative of redemption.
This changes oral/aural culture, the culture of literacy and print culture.
Now think about three ideas.
First, Remediation.
The content of any medium is always another medium.
For example, there are Cinderella story every countries, 콩쥐밭쥐 in Korea.
These stories are about the same story-line.

Second, extending the sensorium.
Media change the relationship of the human body and its sensorium to its environment.
I think that use of technology is important.
If we meet one media art, we would feel interesting from media art includes various technology.
In fact, we react more new thing than old.

Last, the medium is the message.
For McLuhan, the real message of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs.
If story expresses different medium, we feel different even though same story.
And according to each medium, we can change story a little.
When an origin novel made movie, we are touched different each medium.

1.6.1 the status of McLuhan and Williams

Marshall McLuhan & Raymond Williams talk about very different theorists of media.
But between McLuhan and Williams is different.
McLuhan says new media change everything.
Williams tells media can only take effect through already present social processes and sustain existing power relations.
There are the status of McLuhan and Williams.
One thing is Mainstream of media studies played technological elements medium has.
And Williams and Mcluhan carried out their influential work in the 1960s and 1970s.
Marshall McLuhan’s major works are “The medium is the message” and “global village”.

People call opposite of popular culture 'Central culture'.
What does mean central?
I think it comes from people’s an idea.
Central likes traditional and good.
But I think popular also is good.
Culture never comes into popular.

1.5.5 the return of the Frankfurt school critique in the popularisation of new media & conclusion

The ‘culture industry’, the end of democratic participation and critical distance, is Strinati and Alan Meek.
Mass society critics feared four things.
First, the debasement and displacement
Second, the erosion of high cultural traditions
Third, loss of the ability of these cultural traditions to comment critically on society 's values
Last, the indoctrination and manipulation.
Totalitarianism is Fascism and Stalinism.
It appears upon standardization, political indoctrination.
And people are controlled 3S, sex, screen, sports.
In those days popular culture grows up!!!
Because of viewer are getting more.
The ‘mere’ consumer comes from tyranny of market.
I think couch potato is good case.
Active looking back to a pre-mass culture are the recovery of community, the removal of central authority, control, online publishing and virtual communities.
The Brechtian avant-garde and lost opportunitiesv are Bertolt Brecht and Walter Benjamin.
Bertolt Brecht says the Radio as an apparatus of communication.
He also speaks two-way channels of communication in radio.
I think nowadays radio web service offers listener to bring into relationship.
Web service is real-time. So listener can send their tales that time.
Walter Benjamin talks about “aura”.
The “aura” means quality or feeling that seems to surround a person or place or to come from them.
I think aura made by popular culture.
In terms of the amazing novelty of the possibilities that are opening up.
But fails to help us understand what is happening around us.

1.5.3 the discursive construction of new media & conclusion

Discursive is 담론.
Post-structuralist the theory is that language does not merely describe a pre-given reality.
Language operates as microscopes, telescopes and cameras.
Discourses construct their object.
Film and cinema entered a world of handmade images and early kinds of still photographic image, produced theatrical spectacles.
It continued Panorama and dinomara.
And it sophisticated technological visual culture.
For visual culture, we studied images.
I think the language couldn’t communicate correct mean.
But also I don’t think that image always deliveries significance.
Image include thinking that people makes it.
So I think media couldn’t delivery everything.

Why do we need to consider on discursive construction of new media?
Main goals of media archeological approach the study of the cyclically repeating elements guiding the development is related to dejavu.

07. 11. 20.

#18。who was dissatisfied with old media?_1 (o7112o)

1.5.1 the question

This book asks “What is the problem to which new communication media are the solution?”
This talk we can find media framework, made unclear.
Even if the media’s surface is looked very good but its inside is very bad.
I think these things come from society atmosphere.
Superiority of new media is merely retrospective projections or post hoc rationalizations change.
Never new media is not superiority.
It is shaped our consciousness.
I think we have a great notion that new is very good!!!!
Always we like new thing than old thing.
Some people like something, because at discretion.

1.5.2 the technological imaginary

The technological imaginary belongs to psychoanalytic theory.
I think most of us may think that technological imaginary is comprised in science or technology.

We experience various new media, change more.
And I think we would feel our displaced.
For example,. telephone invades the domestic privacy. And email eradicates the time for reflection.
Specially, in this cell-phone case, it is more domestic privacy than telephone.
I think that not for anything in the world new is always good.

#17。what kind of history? 2_2 (o71115)

1.4.4 a sense of deja vu & conclusion

New media have been received have caused several media historians to record a sense of déjà vu.
The déjà vu feels that we have been here before.
Photography and cinema have been used to contextualize the widespread technophilia of the contemporary moment.
In here, the technophilia means technology love, an antonym is technophobic.
Existing body of media history are literacy, the printing press, the book, photography, film, television and music.
The memory couldn’t deliver that time which situation happen.
To the contrary there were two people in same time, situation, each people remembered another situation.
That is memory is not correct.
I think people remembered oneself position.

‘New’ in new media which makes history so important.
Our review of media histories share with other media, and between what they can do and what is ideological in our reception of new media.
I believe that new media comes from understanding old media.

#16。what kind of history? 2_1 (o71113)

1.4.3 the return of the middle ages and other media archaeologies

Today we learned to return of the Middle Ages and other archaeologies.
William says that we can make sense of relation between remote times and the present through the idea that a culture contains dominant, residual, and emergent elements.
That is we can make sense new media if we know past media.
Robin says that about the past media, think in non-technological ways about the past and to recognize what 'modern culture has repressed and disavowed'.
In fact, I didn’t remember media’s history, and I asked why we learn to return thing.
But through this class, I realize why we learn history.
Discovery of the kind of historical precedents for media is opportunities of develop new media.

#15。what kind of history? 1 _2 (o711o8)

1.4.2 new media and the modernist concept of progress

The modernist means to do respect and not to equal the avant-garde.
Thought about new media is replete with a sense of a deferred future.
The view of modernist aesthetic are medium has its own kind of essence and comes into its own.
Medium has to be genuinely new from the past & old media.
The medium developed from egg white on cave to oil painting and acrylic on canvas.
From cave to canvas is the modernism and from oil painting to acrylic is the avant-garde.
Oil painting and acrylic are not same but both paint on canvas.
Steve Holzmann takes the view that most existing uses of new media fail to ‘exploit those special qualities.
He represents the modernist viewpoint.
New it has to make a radical break with the past.
Greenberg did not think that modern art media should or could break with the past in any simple sense.
Medium have itself message.
Photography was better suited to illustrative work and showed how it was not, after all, appropriate to painting.
Painting could now realize its true nature.
I think always art can’t development according to development technology.
By advancing camera, photography art shouldn’t grow.

#14。what kind of history? 1_1 (o711o6)

1.4.1 teleological accounts of new media

Cave paintings have many means, imagination, worship and to delivery information.
This sections deal with cave paintings through delivery.
So, the cave painting appears to hold the seeds of the fax machine, the computer network, the communications satellite and the mobile phone.
I had though cave painting meant a simple art or their hope.
Through this class, I know cave painting has many means.
But I question how we know their think long before.
The interactive telematics culture is more or less where we may be now at the beginning of the new millennium.
For years ago, the interactive telematics culture was photo.
But now, photo is not real thing, because we use various computer tools, photoshop, Illustrator.
The key concepts lead from an abstract system of logic, through the development of calculating machine, to the computer as a ‘medium’.
New media bring old media to some kind of concluding state for good or bad.
I think we have to select correct state in old media.
For comfortable, weak points of old media shouldn’t bring new media.

07. 11. 2.

#13。change and continuity _2 (o711o1)

1.3.1 introduction & 1.3.2 measuring newness

‘Digital television’ is not a new medium, is old media.
On the other hand, new media are Immersive virtual reality, interactive multimedia or online.

Digital technologies that they employ ‘refashion older media’.
‘Refashion themselves to answer to the challenges of new media.’
It seems to us that there is an unassailable truth in this formulation.

I think new media is continuous with old media.
New media are no born in a vacuum and would have no resources to draw upon.
Continuation is very important!!!

07. 10. 31.

#12。change and continuity _1 (o71o3o)

1.3.1 introduction

Media theorists tend to be polarized over the degree of new media’s newness.
To some extent this argument hinges upon the disciplinary frameworks and discourse within which proponents of either side of the argument work.
The revolutionary is important in Academy but ignore in business.
I think that change is very interesting but it gives us fear.
New thing always needs a fitness term.
Revolution needs in our society, but I think "Have revolution Outlived their Usefulness?"

1.3.2 measuring newness

We need to establish from what previous states thing have changed.
Change and revolution have little same things.
Both mean transform but revolution is more aggressive than change.
That is, revolution means to totally change.
In this textbook, this basic question can help us guard against missing at least three possibilities.
1. How can we know that new thing is made from?2. Familiar in everyday use or consumption we may lose our curiosity, Stop to ask question3. Interactivity

I think that ‘new’ always is given continually.
If newness never have old thing, it can’t keep up long time.
We have to learn newness, if new thing is very new and don’t have continuity.
New thing gives advantages but extreme change or newness brings about confusions.
In conclusion, I think that we need new thing, has continuity.

1.2.7 cyberspace & 1.2.8 conclusion

There are two kinds of VR.
One is a site-specific enclosure in technology and the other a way of imagining the invisible space of communication networks.Immersive VR is an image environment.
We can feel hearing and touching.
I think that the Data-glove is as an example in immersive VR.
The Data-glove is very interesting.
If we wear the date-glove in cyberspace, there is nothing, we would feel shaking hands as an example.

The generic concept which subsumes both kids of VR is ‘cyberspace’.
And cyberspace is future fusion in the same frame.
It has embodiment and identity.
A future scenario is virtual actors.
The computing power and bandwidth is difficult to conceive.
In speculating about or anticipating the fusion, we also have to take into account the technological imaginary.
I think that there are already many ‘cyberspace’ in our environment.
But I ask me “Have develops of technological their usefulness?”

Virtual space discussion of the ‘characteristics’ of new media has established the grounds upon which we might now begin substantially to address the questions that they raise.
Through this section, I know about VR.
VR is used many fields and variable case.

1.2.5 virtuality
VR means Virtual Reality.
Virtual reality is an environment which is produced by a computer and seems very like reality to the person experiencing it.
I heard many time VR but I didn’t know its mean.
I know that through this class.
I think that Movie’s development brings on VR.
Specially, it’s important that the film maker has imagination.
I think that the cinema industry is influenced by VR’s development. In conclusion,
the VR is very important.

1.2.6 which virtual reality?
VR has two major but intertwined reference points
One thing is the immersive, interactive experiences provided by new forms of image and simulation technology.
Another thing is ‘Places’ and ‘Spaces’ created by or within communications networks.
In class, we saw VR’s examples.
In fact, I don’t know that we use VR in many situations.
And VR’s future has problems.
Some reasons don’t come under nowadays, but really we have to consider these things.
I think that VR is very interesting and has endless development.

1.2.4 dispersal

New media has differentiated audience is no longer a mass audience.
And it has the multiplicity of messages and source.
For example, mass media thinks about TV, services one way communication.
But, new media active to send an information source to my friend.
We can share informations from programs, pruna, dangnagi etc.
It is good thing we use, but it has many points at issue.

A dispersal sames shift.
It is the product of shift in ouf relationship.

Do you know prosumer?
The prosumer is Product + Consumer.
It means that consumer's power grows up.
In our Internet World, we can feel cosumer's power.

07. 10. 10.

#8。the characteristics of new media 2_1(o71oo9)

1.2.3 hypertext

We think about "hypertext".
Hypertext means a way of connecting pieces of text so that you can go quickly and directly from one to another in dictionary.
For example, we see an one web-page.
But if we want to read another web-page, we quickly go another page.
So, we aren't controled our text.
We also do hypertext in book, bible or textbook.
That is, new media controls difficult more and more, as we make think.
But I don't understand hypertext becasue of a dictionary.
Are you sure of it?

We talk about the Memex.

These are memex image.
The memex is figure desk top pc, has 2 screen.
One screen input informations, other sames our monitor.
It was developed by Bush in 1945(?).
Nowadays, it is easy but it was surprised in old days.

#7。the characteristics of new media 1_2(071004)

1.2.2 interactivity

New media is interactively.
Interactive means between peoples communication,
and this communication happen continutly as much as you can.
But feedback means simply communication.
It make an once reaction.

I think that Internet is the best interactivity media.
Internet secures your anonymity(익명성).
So we are free to express our opinion.
But now, this character chages to real-name system in our society,
becaue people attack one person without distinction in Internet world.
Our fault should clearly caused this situation.
But I think that it takes away the netizen's right.
An anonmity is an advantage of Internet.
Becouse of anonmity, Internet actives to interchage our comment.
If people had netiquette, an anonymity would't make trouble.
I hope that Internet's anonymity go on.

#6。hat are new media? 2_2 & the characteristics of new media 1 (o71oo2)

1.1.5 Distinguishing between kinds of new media
We think about text, representation and subject.
And we consider "How can we experience media?".
All media includes text.
Text isn't word or sentance.
Text has hidden meaning.
That is, we become subject and think about text, when we meet text.
I think that representation connects with variety texts.
We express our emotion from text, photography, writing, music, picture and posting.
They are the representation of our emotion.
We write a comment at article and participate in many medium.
We should already be subject.
We have to opposite media with subjectiving.
If we didn't have an upright subjuectiving, we are controled the media.

We studyed the new media for 2 weeks.
While we studyed, I think about new means and new media.
I don't clearly define the new, but even so I think that new media is us.

1.2.1 digitality
Digital means clean and not noise.
To make from the analogue thing to digital thing, we take these turns.
These are Sampling, Quantization and Endoding.

I think that distinguishing between an analogue and digital is difficult.
For example, I like to take a picture.
I use the film camera.
I develop a picture and scan film.
I get a CD, it include the scaned film.
I start an analogue thing, but finally end a digital thing.
I am confused this situation.
I think nowadays this situation happenes now and then.
From now I am going to think about an analogue & Digital.

07. 9. 27.

#5。what are new media? 2_1

1.1.4 non-technical and inclusive
New Media is non-technical and inclusive!
And it isn't limited to one narrow concept.
Digital media base on analogue media.
But I think that analogue is well worth enough.
And digital isn't always good.

Nowadays, our life surrounded digital things.
Dr.yoon said that eggwhite is getting bigger and bigger.
Then, it exists around us.
That is, eggwhite became digitalize.
The pure media was egg-whitem, inter media was painting itself ,
and new media unites egg-white and painting.

07. 9. 21.

#4。what are new media? 1_2(o7o92o)

1.1.3 the ideological connotations of the new
Today, I go on studing "New Media".
I think about definition of "New".
My textbook defines that new means better, vant-garde and the cutting edge and so on.
I think that glamorous is the most important mean.
Becasue our world is enough glamorous.

Nowadays we use Internet.
It is very useful, familiarity, one of the importand thing in our life and globalising.
But we may need to think about globalising of Internet.
Most of us see Korean's web page.
It means we contact a slice of glamorous information in the world.

An official language of world is unfortunately English.
There are many professional information in English.
So, we'll meet the multiplicity of glamorous information, if our english were good.
Finally we come close New media at least.

Dr.Yoon tell us think about "new".
I've been wondering the thing.
But I don't get a definite answer.
However I think that there isn' new thing.
The world always changes changes changes, we want it or not.
New thing becomes non-fresh thing a moment.
We meet differnt thing every day.
We think that, use that, feel that, and enjoy that.
In conclusion, I say New media is the present our life.
New media is not hard not understand.
But we must think strength and weakness of new media.

Davinci Project( New art education)
Today also watch Video, its theme is technology art.
Technology art expresses art from technology .
It is exciting and unlimited.
During I see the video, I think that that is not fresh.
That is only so much idea!!!
In future, our competitive power will be idea!

07. 9. 17.

#3。what are new media? 1_1(o7o918)

1.1.1 the media as an institution & 1.1.2 the intensity of change
Today I think about "New Media" in my class.
In fact, I can't accurately understand new media.
But I feel certain that new media has a lot bigger power than anything.
Because new media delivers many information, we have to consider.

New media includes not only TV, newspaper , radio but Softwear and information.
It means that value of media change to non-visible thing from visible thing.
So I think we are not easy to understand it.

We'll study this subject "What are new media?" next class.
I'm gonna think about that.

07. 9. 12.

#2。Traditional Thoughts on Art(o7o911)

Is art important?

I think that art is very very important in our life.
We contact many art in life during we don't recognize.
I think art is discussion of think, but art is fun and exciting.
We can't define the art clearly.
However I think we have to see art is natural.
Art isn't difficult.
You listen to the music, see a movie, see a building and so on.
I think that the environment includes art.
We enjoy life from art.

For that reason, we art understanding the art, and we enjoy~!!!!

#1。introduction of the class

I felt uneasy in my Media Esthetics class.
Because Dr.yoon said us in English as soon as class started.
Usually I didn't understand his lecture.
So I though that my select, I clicked media esthetics, is wrong.
But he told us in Korean end of school hours for our understand.
I was relieved.
And I thougt I work hard this class.

Dr.yoon ask us to watch video.
first, the truly soft side of software , by Golan Levin.
It is very exciting.
It is a combination of sound & video.
A man draws a point, line or shape on computer.
Then while they move, sound changes.
Dr.yoon says that this project sames Hyung min Lee's product.
And It looks conversion of idea.
Usually, as chage of sound, video changed.
that is, conversion of idea makes another media.

Second, the glove, beer & smokes films.
It tells us computer game's danger.
Computer game addiction is one of social problems.
I think this films expresses problem.

I expect this class.
It will be fun!!!!! :D
